Because without ginga, it’s not capoeira.

She’s also working on salta jogo (sp?)—as I understand it, creating distance, moving around, etc. So, while some of these guys are really fast and can do incredible…

saltar is to kick or leap or jump. Salto mortal my dictionary wants to translate as “somersault”

We eventually moved locale to where there were more tourists—and also these people dressed up to perform a traditional dance. I don’t know if we missed it or what, but they didn’t do it while we were there.

We always say that summer bodies are made in winter. But if you spent your winter drunk on spiked eggnog and chocolate Santas, spring will just have to do! Fortunately, you’ve got plenty of options to shape up besides dejectedly shuffling along on a treadmill. Here are some of the season’s…

There’s still room in Capoeira Brooklyn’s April Absolute Beginners! Classes start tomorrow.

The Workout: CAPOEIRA

The Goal: Dance off the pastrami weight. A combination of dancing and minimal contact-partner sparring, this energetic Brazilian martial art dates back to the 16th century—but stars like Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez have put it back in the spotlight. Back bridges, cartwheels, squats, and handstands make up capoeira’s core movements, which are done in a fast-paced, non-stop sequence that stacks up to any aerobics class. And the muscle engagement required to keep balance as you shift your weight works all of your muscles, head to toe.

Louvação

We’ve been playing a lot of maculelê lately, which is nice because I feel like I’m actually developing a vocabulary in the dance. If you were in the batizado maculelê performance, you probably already know this one. If you aren’t …

Essa homenagem que estou fazendo
Aos pretos velhos e aos negros bandos
Os que vieram de um pais distante
Trazer maculele Capoeira e canto

Tis the season… for capoeira!!

What better way to prepare for the holidays and the new year than by taking the December Absolute Beginner series and starting your capoeira education?! RB Capoeira Brooklyn is pleased to announce our December Absolute Beginner series dates:

Tuesdays and Thursdays
8:00pm - 9:30pm
December 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 18th, & 20th.

If you have always been curious about Capoeira and wanting to learn more in an environment designed exclusively for new comers, this is the class for you! The series of classes, for those new to Raizes do Brasil Capoeira, meets twice weekly for 3 weeks for a total of 6 classes. Plus, you get 2 make-up classes that can be taken during the first week of January for a grand total of 8 classes.

Classes focus on stretching, conditioning, the fundamental movements of Capoeira, and singing & playing Capoeira instruments. The series provides an excellent foundation for entering our regular, ongoing classes and an introduction to the art, music and history of Capoeira.

The cost of the series is $120 if paid in advance or $135 if paid on the first day of class — this includes one free Raizes do Brasil Capoeira Brooklyn group t-shirt. Participants are allowed up to two make-ups that can be redeemed by attending the ongoing Beginners classes.

Uniform pants (abada) are not required for the series. However, if you choose to purchase an abada/corda within the first week of the series, you receive a 10% discount.

Registration

Register by coming by the academy during ongoing class times OR by sending in full payment with registration and waiver via USPS. You cannot register for class online or via the phone. Registration is limited due to limited space and the series usually fills up before the first day.

Orange-Blue. Thank you Pacato.

Wula Drum in Long Island City has ongoing, open level Djembe & Dundun classes every Monday. 6:15 - 8. Might be a good way for some of us who struggle with drumming to get better at it. On my to-do list.
Keur Djembe on Union might, too.

Confession: ginga asana makes me giggle, but Palmeira’s classes are really fun and wonderful and I highly recommend her DVD.

I already posted this. I don’t play, but I make a brief appearance in the background trying to tend to Rakon’s arm. Two songs I really like appear: Berimbau Bateu (lyrics) which I learned “ao pé do berimbau” (at the foot of the berimbau) but have also heard “embaixo o berimbau” (below/beneath the berimbau) and Idalina

Bater: to beat, agachar: to squat or crouch, rezar: to pray
